The Renewal Process

The renewal process is a routine evaluation during the last year of a charter school’s contract to see if the school will receive another contract to continue operating in the future. The renewal process is based on a school’s SPRI (School Performance Renewal Index) and what kind of growth it made with its students.

The SPRI uses the same components that the state uses for its School Performance Scores (SPS scores) but weights the components differently so that growth has greater importance.

For most schools, the SPRI looks at the last two years of a school’s SPS data.  If a school is in its first contract, it is the better of either the most recent year’s data or the average of its two most recent years’ data. A school’s financial and organizational performance can also impact renewal.
