NOLA-PS Announces Siting Process for 2024-2025 Academic Year

(New Orleans – January 06, 2024) — Following last month's open siting process, NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) received one siting transformation application from ReNew Schools for Robert Russa Moton Charter School. Since there were no siting applicants for Lafayette Academy Charter School, the District is considering all options for the future of the school, from directly running to closing the school.

Final siting decisions for Robert Russa Moton Charter School and Lafayette Academy Charter School will be announced to families next week, and the district will host meetings for scholars, families, and staff to discuss next steps and provide comprehensive support, as needed.

NOLA-PS engaged in the district's open siting process to provide for the sustained operation of Robert Russa Moton Charter School and Lafayette Academy Charter School for the 2024-2025 school year, following the Orleans Parish School Board's (OPSB) approval of Dr. Williams' recommendation to not extend Lafayette Academy's contract and accept Advocates for Innovative Schools' voluntary withdrawal to seek renewal of Moton's contract.

An open siting process is triggered when a current charter operator surrenders its charter, undergoes revocation, or encounters nonrenewal. In such cases, if the superintendent intends to keep the school operational in the upcoming academic year through a transformation process or seeks a new operator for a district-run school, an open siting process is initiated. Charter management organizations are then encouraged to apply to operate the school(s).
