ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE IN JANUARY

(New Orleans – January 19, 2022) – NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS), along with other school districts throughout Louisiana, celebrates School Board Recognition Month every January. More than 640 locally elected school board members throughout our state will be recognized by schools and communities for their service and dedication to public education.

This year's theme, "Rising Above," is especially apt right now, given that many school board members are facing unprecedented challenges given the pandemic and its impact on public education.

Our elected Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) members are meeting the challenge and using their skills and talents to help them navigate unexpected circumstances brought about by the pandemic. They have quickly adapted to changing situations, engaged in creative problem solving, worked as a team, and ensured the District's leadership continues to be successful.

"The OPSB is essential to our public education system," said NOLA-PS Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. "Our board members provide the local governance and oversight that makes it possible for our schools to serve students, including establishing a strategic plan, adopting policies, approving a budget, and selecting and evaluating our next superintendent. We're proud of our District, and School Board Recognition Month is the time to recognize our elected board members."

OPSB will continue to work on developing policies and making tough decisions on complex educational and social issues impacting the entire community. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of more than $600 million, 44,000+ students, 200+ employees, and 75+ buildings.

NOLA-PS is committed to continuing to work with the board and help them navigate through these challenging times, and ultimately strive to ensure all students receive a high-quality education that fosters their individual capabilities and ensures they are prepared for civic, social, and economic success.

-Nolan Marshall, Jr. – OPSB Vice-President – District 7
