NCAP Main Round for 2023-2024 School Year Set to Close

Closes Friday, January 20, 2023

(New Orleans – January 11, 2023) – NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) would like to remind families that the main round of the K-12 NOLA-PS Common Application Process (NCAP) closes Friday, Jan. 20, 2023. NCAP is the annual unified application process for children wishing to attend public schools in New Orleans. New Orleans families can apply for K-12 anytime until the application closes on Jan. 20, 2023. The Early Childhood Common Application opens in February for children 6 weeks to Pre-K4.

Families will be informed of their students' K-12 placements no later than March 31, 2023.

"We know switching from or starting at a new school can be challenging, and we want to better serve families by ensuring they know where their scholar will be attending school as soon as possible," said NOLA-PS Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams. "Our team is working toward making the application process more informative, clear, and easy to use for everyone joining our great school community."

Through our unified enrollment system, NOLA-PS provides scholars and families the opportunity to choose a school that best suits their interests and needs through a centralized enrollment process and a single application.

Families interested in schools with eligibility criteria are still required to meet each school's additional admissions criteria, including an eligibility assessment.

The common application process is central to the NOLA-PS unified enrollment system and aligned to our commitment that every child, every day can participate in a high-quality program that fosters their individual capabilities.

Using the "Enroll" button at nolapublicschools.com, families can research schools and submit an application if their child meets any of the following criteria:

      ● All students who turn 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2023, must enroll and attend Kindergarten per state law!

      ● The student is new to New Orleans or new to public schools.

      ● The student is seeking to transfer from their current school to a new school for the 2023-2024 school year.

      ● The student is in a transitional grade, meaning their current school does not offer their expected grade in the next school year. This category mostly applies to PK-4 and 8th grade students who must choose a new school.

      ● The student is enrolled in a program that requires an application to continue. This information will be communicated to you by your child's school.

Families are encouraged to explore schools and give themselves enough time to participate in additional assessment requirements, if needed. Families can see which schools have eligibility criteria that require next steps on enrollnolaps.com

The NCAP does provide families with specific priorities for student placement based on individual factors, including the current enrollment of a student's sibling and geographic proximity to the school.

Before submitting an application for the 2023-2024 school year, NOLA-PS encourages families to research school choices. To assist in this process, we provide several resources at Enrollnolaps.com:

      ● Explore Schools tool (nola.ps/explore): K-12 schools and Early Childhood school profiles        provide information on school location, grades served, school performance, and extracurricular activities.

      ● Guidance for Families: Additional online videos and interactive resources are available and can assist you in making smart school choices, filling out the NCAP, and more.

New Streamlined Enrollment Process

NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) is eliminating Round 2 enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year. In analyzing three years of data, only about 3.5% of placements for grades K-12 are made during Round 2 and families are notified of their placements in late June. NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) is eliminating Round 2 enrollment so families can get placements for the upcoming year in the faster, simpler Open Enrollment process. Open Enrollment is a rolling enrollment process in which families will be able to select from any open seats not taken during Main Round Enrollment on a first come, first served basis. Placements can be made online without visiting a Family Resource Center. Open Enrollment will begin this summer.

Families who do not participate in main round can participate in Open Enrollment, which begins this summer. Since Main Round Enrollment is the best chance for families to receive their school of choice, NOLA-PS strongly encourages all families to apply by the main round enrollment deadline of Friday, Jan. 20, 2023.
