OPSB Approves Superintendent’s Charter School Contract Renewal Recommendations

NOLA Public Schools' (NOLA-PS) Superintendent Dr. Fateama Fulmore presented renewal recommendations regarding 13 charter school contracts expiring June 30, 2026, during a special Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) business meeting Thursday evening.

Contract renewals were recommended for the following schools:

  • Arthur Ashe Charter School
  • Audubon Gentilly Charter School
  • Booker T. Washington (KIPP)
  • Dorothy Height Charter School (formerly Paul Habans)
  • Edward Hynes Charter School at Parkview
  • Homer A. Plessy Community School
  • KIPP Believe
  • KIPP Central City
  • KIPP Morial
  • Langston Hughes Charter Academy
  • Livingston Collegiate Academy
  • Morris Jeff Community School
  • Young Audiences at Crocker

"I'm thrilled to make these recommendations and proud to witness the significant strides our students and schools are achieving," said Dr. Fulmore. "Our schools have shown an unwavering commitment to student success, adhering to the rigorous standards of the NOLA-PS Charter School Accountability Framework, and providing the high-quality education our children deserve. We are excited for our families and school communities. Congratulations to all school leaders, educators, and staff for ensuring our children continue to grow, achieve, and thrive."

OPSB voted to approve Dr. Fulmore's recommendations.

The charter renewal process is a regular practice the District engages in every year to hold schools accountable; it's a critical aspect of how NOLA-PS manages its portfolio of schools. Under the mostly all-charter school system, schools have the autonomy to set their own curriculum and academic priorities. In exchange for that autonomy, the schools are overseen by NOLA-PS district administration that holds schools accountable to the academic, financial, and operational standards set by the Orleans Parish School Board. During the renewal period, the District reviews a charter school's performance to see if it is fulfilling its obligations. Ultimately, the District's goal is to ensure schools provide the support necessary to help develop the whole child and help students find success after graduation and beyond.

This is a longstanding process that assures transparency and allows the District to hold schools to high standards using the Charter School Accountability Framework (CSAF), which helps assess whether schools have met, exceeded, or fallen short of agreed-upon standards.

Every school goes through a standardized charter renewal review when its contract enters its final year.

School Performance Scores (SPS) are a key component to the usual charter renewal review process. The SPS Score is a letter grade system from A - F that summarizes how well a school is preparing all its students for the next level of study. The state issues these scores, which are determined from state testing, including LEAP tests, for each school. Ultimately, the SPS is used to measure how well schools are educating our students. Additionally, the NOLA-PS School Performance Renewal Index (SPRI) utilizes the same indices that make up the state-issued school performance scores when determining whether a school meets the standard for renewal.
