The Renewal Process
The renewal process is a routine evaluation during the last year of a charter school’s contract to see if the school will receive another contract to continue operating in the future. The renewal process is based on a school’s SPRI (School Performance Renewal Index) and how its growth compares to open admission schools in the city. For most schools, the SPRI is the average of their last two School Performance Scores (SPS scores). If a school is in its first contract, it is the better of either its most recent SPS score or the average of itstwo most recent SPS scores. A school’s finances and organizational performance can also impact renewal.

The Extension Process
The extension process is a routine evaluation during fourth year of a charter school’s contract if it is in its initial (first) charter contract. The results of this evaluation will determine if the school will be allowed to continue to operate for a fifth year.
